Directions
From the car park east in St. Lorenzen/San Lorenzo, head on west towards the town square and through "Marktl". At the pharmacy, follow the signpost 8A on the left to St. Martin/San Martino. Near this village, which is situated close to the important Michelsburg castle (not open to visitors), follow trail no. 9 to the Way of the Cross, which leads to Maria Saalen/Maria Sares. Here you will find the listed pilgrimage church, which harbours a black Madonna and child inside. According to legend, a farmer once came across the miraculous image while ploughing and kept it at home. However, after the black Madonna had repeatedly and miraculously disappeared to its current location, the little church of Maria Saalen was built here in her honour. Next to the church, the country inn Saalerwirt invites you to take a cosy break. The way back to St. Lorenzen goes along the same route.
